Homeownership

One of my first goals as a new city councilman in 2010 was the development of a grant to assist first-time home buyers. This was my first piece of legislation in Blue Springs. With help from local citizen stakeholders, this grant program was approved using Federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. Each year, up to 13 grant recipients received down payment and/or closing costs assistance to purchase their first home in Blue Springs.

Due to the success of this program, the number of annual grants offered was increased to 16. Over 100 buyers have completed the program and are now home-owning, tax-paying citizens! Blue Springs also offers a Minor Home Repair Program using the same federal funding program (CDBG). This grant program assists existing homeowners to make allowable repairs to their homes. Homeownership has been proven to reduce crime and increase community involvement, and I fully support both of these homeownership programs.
